Managing Sleep Disorders
One Individual at a Time

TIRED OF BEING TIRED?

At the McLaren Macomb Sleep Center we believe that individual sleep disorders can be easily managed once they are properly diagnosed.

Sleep disorders are a big problem for many adults but often go undiagnosed and treated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 70 million adults across the nation suffer from some sort of sleep disorder.  A sleep disorder is a medical condition which occurs when a person’s normal sleep pattern is disturbed over a prolonged period of time. Research shows that primary sleep disorders are directly associated with chronic medical diseases such as obesity, depression, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Insufficient sleep can impact daily living and impair reaction time while driving, operating machinery, or performing daily routine work.

Symptoms of sleep disorders include:

  • Frequently having difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or feeling unrefreshed after sleep
  • Snoring loudly, stopping breathing or gasping for breath during sleep
  • Excessive sleepiness during the day
  • Unpleasant, tingling, creeping feelings or nervousness in the legs when trying to sleep

It is important to evaluate the possible causes of these sleep symptoms and find a solution. For those suffering a sleep disorder, treatment is available through the McLaren Macomb Sleep Center. Treatment options include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), behavioral modification, medication and surgery. Treatment is individualized to the specific sleep disorder. For many,  an initial interview and a night spent at the center is all that is required to diagnose a sleep disorder, and may be the beginning of the path to a good night's sleep
