 Kiet Doan, DO, has recently performed the first robotic-assisted single-site cholecystectomy in Genesee County through the use of the da Vinci surgical system at McLaren Flint.
“The work Dr. Doan and his team committed to training and preparing for the (first) case was evident,” said Jeffery Studebaker, a Clinical Sales Manager for Intuitive Surgical. “The patient received a safe, efficient procedure and left the OR with no visible incisions. This will be a great treatment option for Dr. Doan and McLaren to offer the community.”
One million gall bladder procedures are performed in the United States each year. In 2012 more than 5,000 have been performed using the robotic-assisted single-site cholecystectomy technique. All of the patients Dr. Doan has treated to date have experienced successful outcomes.
“The ergonomics of the equipment make the dissection precise and safe and the clarity of the visual field is amazing due to the high definition 3-D camera,” Dr. Doan stated. “The procedure only involves one incision in the belly button area which means less pain for patients. Most people will not even see the incision after about three months.”

Most patients in need of gall bladder removal are candidates for this procedure. Patients with too many adhesions from previous surgeries at the site where the incisions need to be made would not be candidates for the robotic cholecystectomy.
The procedure takes less than an hour and patients go home the same day. Depending upon the physical demands of their jobs, many patients can go back to work the next day and only have restrictions for a couple of days.
