McLaren Flint is a nonprofit, 404-bed tertiary teaching facility located in Flint, Michigan, that serves the medical needs of residents in greater Genesee County and mideastern Michigan. McLaren Flint is affiliated with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in its medical residency programs, including family practice, internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedic surgery and radiology. McLaren Flint also maintains a hematology/oncology fellowship program in partnership with Michigan State University and a surgical oncology fellowship.

- The McLaren Cancer Institute has earned a three year approval award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The McLaren Cancer Institute was created to facilitate the integration of the oncology research and educational resources of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine with the physicians and facilities associated with the McLaren system. The result is the timely delivery of newly discovered treatment options as well as established standards of care to physicians and patients in communities throughout Michigan. The McLaren Cancer Institute has locations in Flint as well as Bay City, Clarkston, Lansing, Lapeer, Marquette, Mount Clemens, Mount Pleasant, Pontiac and Owosso.
- McLaren Flint annually provides more than $31 million in free and uncompensated care to people unable to pay for services. In other Community Benefit services, McLaren contributes an additional value of $4 million in free and reduced fee community-based programs. These include numerous health screenings, health classes, 876 community health education events, 166 support group sessions, support of free medical clinics, health fairs, research activity, transportation for patients, blood drives, immunizations, support of cultural center activities and a multitude of other events that improve the quality of life in our community.

The McLaren Regional Heart and Vascular Center
The McLaren Regional Heart and Vascular Center at McLaren Flint incorporates the latest technology and equipment to diagnose, prevent and treat heart and vascular disease. This leading heart and vascular program offers advanced diagnostic and treatment options, including minimally invasive cardiac procedures, a comprehensive electrophysiology program, robotic-assisted cardiac surgery, as well as research. McLaren Flint is certified by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as a Cardiac Center of Excellence. McLaren Flint is also certified by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center of Excellence. The cardiologists and cardiac surgeons at McLaren Flint have achieved many “firsts” in the region, utilizing advanced technology. McLaren was the first hospital in the region to offer C-D atrial fibrillation ablation to correct irregular heart rhythm in specific patients. McLaren Flint was also the first hospital in the region to perform multi-vessel off pump coronary artery bypass as well as videoscopic saphenous vein harvesting. McLaren was also a leader in offering minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass and minimally invasive aortic valve replacement. Along with expertise in the cardiac arena, McLaren also excels in vascular care. A nationally renowned group of vascular surgeons offer the latest treatment and technology in the area of vascular surgery to patients at McLaren Flint. This group of vascular surgeons was among a select few in the nation chosen for participation in five different clinical trials involving an advanced carotid stenting procedure. McLaren is the only area hospital working with these surgeons in the implementation of these clinical trials.
McLaren Flint’s orthopedic program
McLaren Flint’s orthopedic program performs thousands of reconstruction procedures on hips, knees, and other major joints of the body. McLaren Flint is designated as a Blue Cross Blue Shield Center of Distinction for Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery and Spine Surgery. The Center is at the forefront of advances in total hip and knee replacement through its participation in prestigious Food and Drug Administration studies. As a leading research and teaching center, McLaren works closely with manufacturers of orthopedic devices perfecting and evaluating innovative procedures for bone and joint surgeries. Orthopedic surgeons at McLaren Flint are regional leaders in minimally invasive procedures. Physical therapy, occupational therapy and sports medicine programs are offered at several community satellite locations. Joint Express is a special program in place for orthopedic patients facing a knee or hip replacement. Therapy starts sooner, dependence on pain medication is reduced, and patients receive encouragement and support from a personal recovery coach and others who participate in the program with them. Other benefits of the program include a comprehensive educational session prior to surgery; significant improvement in mobility at the time of discharge; patient-centered pain management allows them to stay more alert and maintain a higher energy level after surgery; and their recovery is speedier overall.
McLaren’s Regional Rehabilitation Center
McLaren’s Regional Rehabilitation Center is mid-Michigan’s most experienced hospital-based rehabilitation program, with 18 inpatient rehabilitation beds. McLaren’s team of rehabilitation specialists represent a wide range of disciplines such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, audiology, certified therapeutic recreation specialists, discharge planners, social workers, rehabilitation nurses, physiatrists and other physicians, psychologists and neuropsychiatrists, clinical dietitians, prosthetists and orthotists. Outpatient Rehabilitation services are provided at several satellite facilities, Bristol Place in Flint Township, and in the Fenton and Flushing communities.
McLaren Cancer Institute
McLaren Cancer Institute is nationally recognized for providing advanced treatment therapies as well as a medical staff of highly experienced and skilled cancer specialists, including medical, surgical and radiation oncologists. The McLaren cancer program has earned the three-year approval award from the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) Commission on Cancer. At McLaren Cancer Institute, a multidisciplinary approach implements the most current philosophies in cancer therapy. Personal care plans, coordinated by a team of physicians, may employ chemotherapy or immunology, radiation therapy, surgery, or a combination of treatment modalities. McLaren Flint also has an inpatient oncology unit for acute treatment of patients with cancer. Specialists at the Cancer Institute have participated in advanced clinical trials as well as pioneered lifesaving techniques in cancer care. McLaren Cancer Institute the first cancer program in Michigan to introduce the TrueBeam STX radiation treatment system, representing the most advanced photon technology available The System irradiates cancer with extreme precision with better beam shaping ability to save normal tissue. In other advances, a $65 million dollar proton beam treatment center is under construction on the campus of McLaren Flint which is expected to treat patients in Spring of 2013. McLaren Cancer Institute has expanded its outreach to provide radiation therapy at the Lapeer campus and also at Memorial Healthcare’s cancer center in Owosso.
The McLaren Neurosciences program
The McLaren Neurosciences program offers patients a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options, based upon the complexity of care required. Experienced physician specialists in neurology and neurosurgery utilize state-of-the-art instrumentation to provide a full scope of neuroscience services to area residents. McLaren’s neurosurgery program also works in cooperation with radiation oncology in offering radiosurgery to treat cranial and extracranial cancer and lesions. McLaren Flint offers the area’s first and only interventional neurology program and is among a small percentage of hospitals in the U.S. offering neurointerventional services.
McLaren Spine Program
McLaren Spine Program The McLaren Spine Program offers a uniquely specialized approach to diagnose and treat back and neck pain. The program is totally designed around the mission of improving function, alleviating pain and enhancing quality of life for people with spine problems. As the region’s first truly comprehensive spine program, The McLaren Spine Program features a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of back and neck pain. The program combines the expertise of specialists in the following specialties: neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, physical medicine, physical therapy, clinical health psychology, pain management, interventional radiology and certified case management. These experts work together in a coordinated system to identify and treat conditions of the back and neck, ranging from the most common to the most complex. Whether a patient’s treatment is medical or surgical, the team of specialists at the McLaren Spine Program is dedicated to applying leading edge technology, the latest techniques and the most effective therapies to help patients feel, move and live better. A new program, Spine Express, is geared to enhance patient education pre-during-and post-surgery.
The McLaren Behavioral Health Center
The McLaren Behavioral Health Center offers a 34-bed inpatient mental health unit at McLaren Flint as well as adult and adolescent partial hospitalization programs and outpatient services located at Oak Bridge Center in Flint Township.
Women’s Services
Women’s Services are highlighted by the BirthPlace at McLaren Flint, which features 14 state-of-the-art LDRP suites, an antepartum room, surgical suite for Caesarean sections and four postpartum rooms. McLaren provides the only Certified Nurse Midwifery Program in Genesee County. The medical center recently added a dedicated gynecological post-surgical recovery unit to better standardize care. McLaren also offers its female patients a comprehensive breast center, incontinence clinic, women’s imaging, cardiology, and many more services catering to the specific needs of women.
Trauma and Emergency Services
Trauma and Emergency Services feature dedicated, board-certified emergency physicians, nurses and clinicians as well as sophisticated lifesaving equipment in a newly expanded setting designed to enhance patient care and services with advanced technology and facilities.
Surgical Service
Surgical Services were recently enhanced with the introduction of the da Vinci surgical robotics system. McLaren Flint is the first hospital in the region to implement this innovative robotics technology. The da Vinci system enhances surgical capabilities by enabling the performance of complex surgeries through tiny surgical openings. Surgical applications at McLaren include prostatectomies, mitral valve repair and other cardiac procedures, gynecological surgery, bariatric surgery, and some general surgical procedures. McLaren was also the first hospital in the state to offer single port, or “scarless” surgery, a minimally invasive procedure.
McLaren Bariatric Institute
The McLaren Bariatric Institute provides a fully comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to caring for health care needs in the bariatric surgery process. The McLaren Bariatric Institute is certified as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Patient services include a personal assessment, internal medicine consultation, psychological evaluation, nutritional counseling, surgical consultation, pre and post surgical exercise plan, psychological support services, post operative follow-up care, support groups and a fully monitored and specially-equipped bariatric unit for inpatient care. Surgical options offered through the McLaren Bariatric Institute include Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Procedure, and Open Roux-en-Y Procedure.
